The Bank Mega story

Bank Mega emerged from a family-owned business in 1969 that was known as PT Karman Bank. The company changed its name to Mega Bank in 1992 when they also relocated the headquarters from Surabaya to Jakarta. PARA GROUP, which is now called CT Corpora, acquired the private bank in 1996. Indonesian business tycoon Chairul Tanjung owns CT Corpora.

The company subsequently went public on the Jakarta Stock Exchange in 2000 and adopted its current name in the same year. Bank Mega has 369 branch offices, over 5,900 permanent employees and total assets worth IDR83.76 billion as of 2018.

The recruitment process

Most people apply online for job vacancies at Bank Mega. Take note of the required age before you submit an application. The Mega Management Development Program (MMDP), for instance, is not open to individuals who are over 27 years old. You should also have a minimum GPA of 3.00 for S1 education or 3.25 for S2 education.

The Customer Service Training Program & Teller Training Program also requires applicants to be under 27 years old. They should be at least 160cm in height as well and have a minimum GPA of 2.75 for D3 education. The same requirements apply for aspiring members of the Young Financial Academy (YFA), except for the height requirement. Bank Mega, however, prefers to hire individuals with sales experience.

Career prospects

The MMDP hastens the professional development of recent graduates who pursue a career at Bank Mega. The program involves several training classes and fieldwork. Management trainees typically spend 12 months on education and training. If you join the YFA, you should commit ten months for the training period.

Entry-level roles for experienced professionals include retail funding officers (RFOs) and relationship managers. RFOs must not be more than 37 years old, have a minimum education of D3, and marketing experience preferably with an AAJI license and in selling insurance products. Bank Mega’s relationship managers are expected to have S1 education with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and have at least two years of related experience.

If you’re keen on staying with the company for several years, branch managers and performance management heads are some of the likely positions for a long-term career path. There is no age limit for these roles, but candidates must have at least five years of related experience.

Remuneration

Interns at Bank Mega earn between IDR500,000 and IDR2 million per month on average. The monthly average salaries for administrative employees, bank tellers and customer service staff range from IDR1.5 million to IDR3.2 million. MMDP employees and management trainees earn between IDR3 million and IDR5 million per month on average. Not much is known about the company’s benefits and perks, although some employees said that they receive health insurance coverage.

The culture

Most employees said that the company is a great place to learn about the banking industry, despite the low salary. Bank Mega only compels employees to focus on specific tasks, which means you can expect to do the work listed in the job description upon applying for a vacancy. The company’s learning opportunities, relaxed policies and healthy work-life balance seem to be positive things that offset below-average salaries.

The competition

Bank Mega’s foreign and local peers in Indonesia’s private banking sector include Bank ANZ Indonesia, Bank BTPN, Bank J Trust Indonesia, PT Bank Central Asia and PT Bank Himpunan Saudara.

Social contributions

The company’s corporate social responsibility programs include Mega Peduli (MP) and Mega Berbagi (MB). The MP initiative occurs once every year when employees volunteer in homes for the disabled and elderly, orphanages and victims of natural disasters among others in need. In 2018, Bank Mega distributed IDR1.6 billion of relief goods to underprivileged people.

The MB program involves educational projects such as infrastructure development. The company has collected IDR100.4 billion of donations as of 2018 for the improvement of several schools in Indonesia.

The vibe of the place

Bank Mega prefers to hire younger people. It’s unclear if they make an exception for older individuals with sought-after skills. You should expect a typical eight-hour workday at the bank.

Some employees believe that the company can improve the compensation structure, even if their workload may not seem overly exhausting. You should temper your salary expectations if you plan to negotiate despite finishing school at the top of your class.
